Bollinger Band Scalping Systems: 7 Forex Strategies Compared

These seven forex scalping systems are built around Bollinger Bands, often combined with an oscillator such as the RSI, MACD or Money Flow Index. Most trade on M1 to M5 charts and look for price stretched to an outer band, or for a band breakout after a quiet period. Each system below lists its indicators, timeframe, buy and sell rules, stop-loss and exit, so you can compare them side by side. If you are new to the indicator, read our Bollinger Bands guide first.

These systems were collected from public trading forums and are explained here for education. They have not been independently backtested; results depend on spreads, execution and discipline.

Scalping with Money Flow Index and Bollinger Bands

Mean-reversion scalping: enter after price closes outside a Bollinger Band with MFI extreme, confirmed by a reversal candle.

Timeframe 5-minute
Pairs EUR/USD, AUD/USD, GBP/USD
Indicators Bollinger Bands (20, 2), Money Flow Index (8)

Buy rules:

  1. MFI drops below 20 (oversold).
  2. Price closes below the lower Bollinger Band.
  3. Next candle closes higher as bullish confirmation.
  4. Enter long on open of the candle after confirmation.

Sell rules:

  1. MFI rises above 80 (overbought).
  2. Price closes above the upper Bollinger Band.
  3. Next candle closes lower as bearish confirmation.
  4. Enter short on open of the candle after confirmation.

Stop-loss: Just beyond the signal band: below swing low for longs, above swing high for shorts.

Exit: Fixed targets: AUD/USD 6 pips, EUR/USD 8 pips, GBP/USD 10 pips; alternatively exit at middle band.

Bollinger Band scalp GBP/JPY

Mean-reversion scalp fading price stretched into outer Bollinger Bands, targeting a snap-back toward the 50-period middle band.

  3. Prefer a rejection bar closing back inside the band.
  4. Avoid band-walking momentum moves and UK/Japan news.

Stop-loss: Stop just beyond yellow band or recent extreme, risking 0.5-1%; time stop closes trade after 3-5 minutes without follow-through.

Exit: Take 5-10 pips or middle band, whichever first; partial profit and trail if price stalls.

Bollinger Bands, RSI and ADX Trading System

Mean-reversion M1 scalping: fade outer Bollinger Band touches when RSI confirms an extreme and ADX below 32 shows no strong trend. Trade London, New York and Asian windows only; avoid high-impact news.

Mean-reversion scalping on M5: trade in direction of band slope, entering when price penetrates the opposite band and snaps back toward the middle line.

How to Test These Systems Safely

  1. Pick one or two systems whose rules you can follow without interpretation.
  2. Set them up on a demo account with the broker’s real spreads; several systems use custom indicators that must be installed in MQL4/Indicators (see our free MT4 indicators for common tools).
  3. Check that arrow or signal indicators do not repaint: scroll back and compare past signals with what you saw live.
  4. Record at least 50-100 trades, including costs, before deciding whether a system has an edge.
  5. Risk 0.5-1% per trade and stop for the day after a set loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bollinger Band scalping system is best?

None is best in every market. Mean-reversion systems work in quiet ranges, breakout systems after squeezes. Test two or three on a demo account with realistic spreads and keep the one whose rules you follow most consistently.

What Bollinger Band settings do scalpers use?

The default 20, 2 is the most common. Some systems use wider bands (20, 3 or 50, 3) to mark extremes, or shorter ones (10, 1) for faster signals.

Can I scalp with Bollinger Bands alone?

It is better to add a filter such as an oscillator or a higher-timeframe trend, because touches of the bands are not signals on their own.
