Forex Market Holidays 2026 and 2027: US, UK and Japan Calendar (Eastern Time)
The forex market trades 24 hours a day, five days a week, but it does not trade evenly on holidays. When a major financial centre such as New York, London or Tokyo is closed, liquidity in its currency drops, spreads widen and prices can jump on small orders. This page lists the US, UK and Japanese holidays for 2026 and 2027, the daylight-saving dates that shift session times for US traders, and how to plan your trading around them. All times are Eastern Time (ET).
Key Dates at a Glance
- Christmas and New Year: December 25 and January 1 are the thinnest days of the year. Most brokers close or trade with very wide spreads, and the weeks around them are quiet.
- Good Friday: April 3, 2026 and March 26, 2027. US stock markets and most of Europe are closed, so forex trades very thinly even though it stays open at many brokers.
- US holidays: on days such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day or Labor Day, USD pairs move less during the New York session and spreads can widen.
- Golden Week in Japan: April 29 to May 6, 2026 and April 29 to May 5, 2027. Yen liquidity in the Tokyo session is lower.
- Daylight-saving gaps: for a few weeks each March and autumn, New York and London are only 4 hours apart instead of 5, so the London session runs one hour later in Eastern Time and the London–New York overlap lasts until about 1 PM ET instead of 12 PM ET.
Why Holidays Matter for Forex Traders
Forex has no central exchange, so the market never officially “closes” for a holiday. What changes is who is trading. Banks in the holiday country step back, and fewer orders means:
- Wider spreads, which raise the cost of every trade;
- Sudden spikes, because a single large order can move a thin market;
- Stop losses filled at worse prices (slippage);
- Weak follow-through, as breakouts often fail without volume.
Many traders reduce position size on holiday days or skip them entirely. If you do trade, size every position from your stop with the position size calculator and expect costs to be higher than usual.
Daylight-Saving Dates That Shift Your Sessions
The US and the UK change their clocks on different dates. During the gap weeks, London opens and closes one hour later in Eastern Time (8:00 in London is 4 AM ET instead of 3 AM ET), so the London–New York overlap runs from 8 AM to about 1 PM ET instead of 8 AM to 12 PM ET.
| Year | US clocks forward | UK clocks forward | UK clocks back | US clocks back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Sun Mar 8 | Sun Mar 29 | Sun Oct 25 | Sun Nov 1 |
| 2027 | Sun Mar 14 | Sun Mar 28 | Sun Oct 31 | Sun Nov 7 |
So the shifted weeks are March 8–28 and October 25–31 in 2026, and March 14–27 and October 31–November 6 in 2027. Japan does not use daylight saving. The live market hours clock applies these changes automatically, and forex market hours in Eastern Time explains each session.

How to Plan Around Holidays
- Check this calendar each Sunday and mark any holiday in a centre whose currency you trade. A US holiday matters for every USD pair, a UK holiday for GBP pairs, and a Japanese holiday for JPY pairs.
- Trade the pair whose markets are open. On a Japanese holiday, EUR/USD in the London–New York overlap is usually unaffected. See best forex pairs for beginners.
- Cut size or stay flat on the thinnest days: Christmas, New Year, Good Friday and the US Thanksgiving week.
- Watch for gaps when markets reopen after a long weekend, especially on Monday mornings in the Asian session.
- Check your broker’s holiday schedule. US brokers publish their own trading hours for Christmas and New Year, and swap charges can be tripled ahead of a holiday.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the forex market open on US holidays?
Usually yes, because other centres such as London and Tokyo are open, but USD liquidity is lower and spreads can be wider during New York hours. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are the exceptions: most of the market is closed.
Is forex open on Good Friday?
Many brokers keep forex open, but with US stock markets and most European centres closed it is one of the thinnest trading days of the year.
What time does forex close for Christmas?
It depends on your broker. Many close early on December 24 and stay closed on December 25, then reopen with thin liquidity until early January. Check your broker’s published holiday hours.
Do daylight-saving changes affect forex hours?
Yes. Because the US and UK change clocks on different dates, the London session shifts by an hour in Eastern Time for a few weeks each spring and autumn.
